They laughed at it.

In the sense that they didn't take it as a serious proposition from the word go.

What did the commentators say about the Payet 'foul' during the match? Seemed such a blatant penalty at the time.

Re: West Ham v Sunderland - Official Match Thread FT 1-0
I haven't heard the ref's interpretation of the Payet foul 'incident', as to whether he deemed him out of play, or if he just decided to let it go by.

Based on some of his other decisions, I suspect the latter. We certainly didn't get the rub of the green from him overall.

And it's not realistic to say "if Sunderland had taken their chances that didn't go in, they'd have got a draw". Conversely, if we had scored all our chances, goal for goal, they would still have lost.

>>> Payet is wasted on the wing, get him in the centre, and give him license to do whatever and go wherever he wants.

Thing is, when we did that in the second half was when Sunderland really got control of the match and our midfield was getting overrun. At least Lanzini offers some moderate defensive cover when played central, so is generally the better bet.

The way to try Payet central would be to play two of our stronger defensive midfielders in a 4-2-3-1, but we seem really stuck on playing the one anchor man in every match.

If you are 'off' the pitch, then you cannot be 'in the box', can you? The penalty area is a part of the pitch.
Actually, I thought it should have been a penalty, as he and the ball were in play. Not sure how the law applies.

But come to think of it, the one in the second half that went to straight to Adrian was Byram because that is when he got his yellow on Defoe on the edge of the box.

Re: West Ham v Sunderland - Official Match Thread FT 1-0
That moment in the 2nd half when Payet was fouled when off the pitch but in the box, why wasn't that a penalty?

The most dangerous one in the end was neither Noble or Byram, (don't remember who but wrong colour - yes I know racist and all that). It was the one where Khazri hit the bar, though I think Adrian might of had it covered.

I disagreed with Slav's post match interview, I don't think we deserved to win, a draw would have been fair and maybe still a bit harsh on Sunderland.

Important win this when you look at what a pig of a month March is. Home to Spurs and away to Everton, Chelsea and Man U. Through in the cup and 4 points would be a decent return.

Not mentioned (as far as I can see) is Sir Geoffs' half time interview when he was asked about scoring 6 against Sunderland in 1968....he said (something like) "...well it was better than Brian Dear who only scored 5 against Leicester so he can Fuck off !!"...not a dry eye in the house

Huffers

Quite sure we had one each half via Mark, first into the wall, second straight through to Adrian. The Byram free kick was further out iirc?

I could be wrong... we were so far back in BMU yesterday we went to the Denmark for our half time piss & pint...

Not knocking Nobes, mind, thought he played well overall.

One free kick was given away by Byram, not both by Noble.

Re: West Ham v Sunderland - Official Match Thread FT 1-0
By the standards we have come to expect we were poor yesterday. Our regular players are starting to look tired and those coming back obviously lack match fitness. I hope we rise to the occasion against Tottenham under the lights, and suspect we will, but it seems that playing a couple of games a week is beginning to take its toll. Remember our season started earlier than most others.

Re: West Ham v Sunderland - Official Match Thread FT 1-0
I didn't think the ref was too bad yesterday, too be honest, but that's probably in comparison to the standard we've had to put up with previously.

It was a very poor game, for me, I think we're accommodating our best player at the moment, when we should be building around him. Payet is wasted on the wing, get him in the centre, and give him license to do whatever and go wherever he wants.

Noble also has to play higher up, we look a much better team when he does, and Obiang sits. Lanzini will have to do the job on the flank.

If it means dropping Kouyate, then that's the sacrifice we have to make. But we have to get our best player in a position where he can do most damage, for me.

Fair enough - just it habn't come up before and it was only really noticeable on TV for the first time yesterday.

I wonder what the bill is to keep the sward at the level we are used to? It can't be pin money as the Boleyn has always been famous for its turf - even I know that.

COOL HAND LUKE 6:41 Sun Feb 28
Re: West Ham v Sunderland - Official Match Thread FT 1-0
Pitch is noticeably 'not to our normal standards' - silly really as it is WHU's game that suffers most (made no difference to Slumberland's 'belt it downfield' style). Having said that they were out working on it yesterday even before the stands had cleared after the game. Can only think as some have said we are winding down ready to move - let's hope we don't pay for that in the tail end of the season...

Got no problem with Byram - he's a warrior, he'll develop a bit more finesse as he goes, but he's a 'take no take no' and we need a bit of that.

Haven't seen or heard Sam's views on it yet but I have to say if Sunderland had anybody with a decent pair of shooting boots they could easily have scored two or three themselves. Two great free kick oppo's 25 yards out, both courtesy of Mr Noble, as per. Don't know what others thought, but it was almost as if we did 'just enough to get a result' yesterday, without ever really hitting top gear?

We were guilty of too many passes around the box second half, it lead to us trying to tippy tappy on the (very shit) parts of the pitch down by the 6 yard box / goal-line areas, when a few more shots / follow ins from a bit further out would have served us better.

I don't normally comment too much on the ref as it's a difficult thankless task most games, but the geezer yesterday was a fackin joke at times - it was almost like he was trying to antagonise us with some of the (obviously wrong) calls re free kicks and throw ins. Laughable - hope he gets a kick in the nuts from his gaffers for yesterday.

Reasonable performance all round by the lads without really getting out of bed. And anyway, it's hard to see how Sunderland expect to be taken seriously when you're playing in lurid bright green kit.

Funniest moment: Sam hopping up and down like a demented gnome on a tic-tac course, after three successive goal kicks had gone straight out for WHU throw ins... you gotta be REALLY fackin annoyed to get that much bulk off the ground in one go...

Watched the highlights, wasn't very long................

Great goal from Antonio though, almost a cracker from Noble and Carroll whom i sure a few on here were saying was crocked for a few months???? but was back after only a few weeks out and unlucky not to get the second.

The Walrus,s post match interview was a tad delusional but thats Sam for you.
